John’s Construction Truck Themed 2nd Birthday Party
It’s hard to believe my baby boy turned TWO this past month! Where did the time go? It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming our double rainbow baby into this world and bringing him home. Now he’s getting ready to be a big brother (in January).
Last year, he was obsessed with tractors and his favorite book (Ten Tiny Farm Friends), and for his first birthday we had a John Deere and Farm Friends birthday party. While he still loves those things just as much, it seems like this year has been all about construction trucks. So to celebrate John’s second trip around the sun, we had a construction truck themed birthday party! It was a relatively small party this year. However, that didn’t stop me from going over the top to celebrate my little man. I can’t wait to share the details from his party. If you’re throwing a construction themed party for your little one soon, I hope this look at John’s party inspires you!

Construction Birthday Party Details
I had so much fun planning and putting together John’s 2nd birthday party this year. While this year’s party was a lot smaller than last year, I wanted him to celebrate him big so that he felt loved and special. He had SO much fun, and he still talks about his party when he points out the invitation on the side of our fridge or sees pictures. It was such a special day surrounded by family and some of our friends.
If you’re looking to plan something similar, here are the details from John’s 2nd construction themed birthday party!
Invitations & Stationery
Usually when it comes to invitations, I order stationery and send them out in the mail. I was definitely behind on the planning this year, so I didn’t have a chance to order them in time to mail out traditional invitations. (I’m honestly still beating myself up about it!) I ended up ordering these diy customizable invitations from Etsy, and I sent them out to our family and friends via text message along with a message about his upcoming party. It’s an instant downloadable file (including both an invitation and matching thank you tag for favors) that you can edit and have printed yourself. While it wasn’t the ideal situation and I still wish I could have sent out physical invitations, they were still super cute. In the end, I still printed a few copies as keepsakes for family.
Decor & Set-up
One thing that I really love about Amazon party decor is that you can often get decoration ‘kits’ for different party themes. For John’s construction truck themed party, I ordered this orange, yellow, and black balloon garland kit. My favorite thing about balloon garland kits like this one is that everything is packaged and ready to put together — and I don’t have to go out and try to create my own formula of balloon colors and sizes. The kit I bought came with balloons, the balloon tape, and even the glue dots. All I needed was my electric balloon pump, and I was able to get it done relatively quick. I hung a balloon garland on the front porch to welcome people in, and then I hung a massive balloon garland in my kitchen as a backdrop to the food displayed on the kitchen island.

In addition to the balloon garland kit, I purchased this construction truck party decorating kit that had even more balloons, happy birthday banners, cupcake toppers, and signs for the party. It was absolutely perfect! Everything matching in one little kit — saving me time (and money) shopping around! I also picked up some yellow plastic construction hats that I placed on the ‘kids table’ with some coloring pages and crayons. They were a huge hit!
Lastly, I ordered this construction party supply kit that had all the plates, cups, napkins, and utensils in it. I ended up getting some extra black and yellow plates and napkins at Dollar Tree to make sure I had enough, but it was perfect. It was so great having everything match and go together. I also had some leftover tire cups and swirly straws from last year’s party that we ended up using.
In regards to the rest of the set-up, we had food inside in the kitchen and then some tables with linens and chairs outside in our back yard. We had a bounce house set up for the kiddos and corn hole boards for the adults. It was the perfect weather to hang out outside with everyone for the afternoon! Our tables were just plastic fold out tables dressed with linens from Table Cloth Factory. As a former wedding planner, I always prefer renting linens — but I LOVE using Table Cloth Factory for smaller events where I just need a few linens. Their linens are great quality and super inexpensive. I always keep them on hand for times such as these!
Food & Cake
When it came to the food, I really tried to keep it simple for myself by ordering pizza (one of John’s favorite foods!) To go with the pizza, we had assorted individual bags of chips as well as some sweet treats that I (halfway) homemade. For the food spread, I named everything with these food labels that I made to keep with the construction theme, and I think it turned out so cute!
- Tools = Utensils (Forks/Knives/Spoons)
- Equipment and Supplies = Plates and Napkins
- Pizza for the Crew
- Lumber = Vanilla and Chocolate Wafer Cookie Sticks
- Fuel = Drinks (Sweet and Unsweet Tea Canisters)
- Ethanol Free Fuel = Water Bottles
- Wood Chips = Chip Bags
- Dip Ahead = Veggie Tray (with dip!)
- Paint Brushes = Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispy Treats on Sticks
- Dip Sticks = Chocolate Dipped Pretzel Rods
I ordered John’s plain cake and cupcakes from Publix so I didn’t have to worry about having time to bake and ice cakes by myself. I just put the toppers from the decorating kit onto the cupcakes. Then I decorated his big yellow cake myself with crushed Oreos, mini Reeses, and these mini construction trucks that came in (you guessed it!) a kit from Amazon. I am absolutely obsessed with how his cake came out. I think it turned out SO cute! John literally squealed from excitement when he first saw it. After the party, I cleaned the trucks off, and he still plays with them alongside his matchbox cars.
