How-to Add Pops of Color into a Neutral Space
How-to Add Pops of Color into a Neutral Space
As you all know, I’m a huge lover of cozy neutrals. My decorating style is really a mixture of different farmhouse and cottage styles. However, I’ve noticed that this spring and summer I’ve really embraced incorporating more color into my neutral decor. And you know what? I am really loving it! Color is not typically something I gravitate towards when it comes to home decor, but I have loved how little pops of color have brightened up the spaces for summer.
Meanwhile, when I talk to people about their home decor, I hear the same frustration voiced over and over. They know what they like when they see things individually, but they are lost on how to pull everything together in their home. This especially happens when it comes to adding in color to their somewhat neutral home decor. Lucky for you, today on the blog I’m going to spill my secrets and tell you the easiest (and inexpensive!) ways for you to start incorporating color into your home decor – without looking like a circus!
Easy Ways to Add Color To Your Neutral Home Decor
I promise you that adding color into your home decor is really not as hard as it may seem. It is also not as frustrating as it may be to you right now. (After today, you’ll be a pro while shopping!) It all starts with this. I have one huge rule that I follow when it comes to color in my home decor…
Don’t Break the Bank – Focus on Accessories!
One thing my momma taught me from the beginning (in those broke college days!) was that you keep your permanent / bigger furniture pieces neutral. It’s kind of like shopping for closet staples to get the most out of your investment in designer pieces – your basics are neutrals, and you add in color with your accessories and statement pieces.
It’s the same way for home decor. The pieces that you’re less likely to change out every year (sofas, chairs, curtains, paint colors, coffee tables, tables, etc. etc.) should be neutral. From there, you can add in home decor ‘accessories’ to help accentuate and refine your style. Not only is it more cost effective to change your style from year to year as trends come and go, but it is also the easiest way to add in color and seasonal touches to your home.

1. Think Textiles
One of the easiest and inexpensive ways to add in color to your home’s decor is through textiles. Mainly because it doesn’t take much of them to make a difference!
Pillows – Add in 2 or 3 colored / patterned throw pillows to your existing neutral pillows (or add them in by themselves to your neutral furniture) to add some visual interest and catch the eye in your living room. Adding in textures and patterns with your pillows is also a great way to give your space more dimension. I recommend going to HomeGoods or Target where nice throw pillows are typically only around $20!
Throw Blankets – Like pillows, a colored / textured / patterned throw blanket is a great (and practical) way to add in some color or a seasonal touch into your living room. Movie nights, whether in the summer or winter, aren’t complete without throw blankets and popcorn. I also recommend going to HomeGoods or Target for these. They have super nice quality ones for a great price point!
Table Runners – Moving on to the dining room, table runners are a great and inexpensive way to add a seasonal touch to your tablescape. Whether floral or a pop of color to a textured or patterned runner, you really can’t go wrong having a few of these on hand for each season. I typically have a darker gray knit runner for the fall and winter, and I was gifted this floral one from BBJ Linen that I’ve been loving for the spring and summer. Target and HomeGoods are my favorite places to grab seasonal tablerunners. (Are you seeing a pattern?) However, I’ve also made my own for photoshoots I’ve been able to style. Just go to Hobby Lobby (or any fabric store) and purchase your favorite fabric to make your own!
2. Think Seasonal Accessories and Statement Pieces
Table Settings – Sticking in the dining room, another way to add color or seasonal touches to your home decor is with your tablesettings. I love making my tablesettings a statement to guests who walk through my door. Meanwhile, I have a collection of different charger plates and linen napkins that I can incorporate for the different seasons. I tend to buy my napkins from HomeGoods, At Home, and Amazon. I buy my charger plates from Hobby Lobby and Dollar Tree. They are a great and inexpensive way to add in a little detail that really makes all the difference with your tablescape.
Wall Art, Rugs, and Smaller Decor Pieces – Smaller home decor pieces, along with wall art and rugs, are another way to add some color into your neutral home decor. You can easily incorporate these items into bookshelves and on coffee tables to add in a little bit of color that will pop against your neutral decor.
While they may not always be the most inexpensive way, wall art and rugs are a huge way that you can make a statement or focal point in your home that ties everything together color-wise. Since they are a more expensive investment, I’d say that you should pick your statement / focal piece (whether it be a piece of art work or a large area rug) and pull the colors for your other accessories and textiles from it.

3. Think Florals and Greenery
Finally, think florals and greenery. Especially in the spring and summer, florals and greenery can be a super easy and seasonal way to add color into your home’s neutral decor. Add them in vases on your tables for a centerpiece. You could also add them in a vase on a coffee / sofa table or bookshelf in your living room for a pop of color. It really is as easy as grabbing a vase and some Trader Joes blooms.
